Summary of Connecticut Graduated Licensing Law

Connecticut has a two stage licensing process for minors.

  1. Permit (at least age 16). We recommend:
  2. Driver EdToGo Video-to use during the Permit stage with high school or commercial driver education course. Shows the parent how to teach collision-free driving habits and provides unique teaching tools (mirrors, checklists, videos, audio instruction series, etc.)
  3. Permit must be held for 180 days for Home Training or 120 days with completion of high school or commercial driver education course.
  4. Regular License (age 16 ½ if has had Permit at least 6 months, or 4 months with high school or commercial driver education).

Under age of 18, must obtain Learner's Permit and hold for 180 days (120 days with commercial or high school driver training).

Permit allows student to practice with licensed driver at least 20 years old licensed for minimum 4 consecutive years. Limited access highway driving allowed after permit held at least 60 days.Must pass vision and 10 question knowledge test.

Parent, court-appointed legal guardian, or spouse over 18 years of age must provide consent.

Test Requirements:
There are two parts to the permit test. First, a vision test is administered, followed by a knowledge test consisting of 10 questions.

Driver Training:
If you plan to be home trained, you must also complete a five hour course through a commercial or secondary school covering safe driving practices, including the effects of alcohol and drugs on a person operating a motor vehicle, as well as the penalties for alcohol/drug related motor vehicle violations.

 
Driver's License
Age 16 ½

Under 18 years of age, must show proof of driver training at the time of the driver's test.

Applicants may be trained at home by one of the following: parent, foster parent or legal guardian, grandparent, or spouse of a married minor applicant

Trainer must sign a statement at the time of the test which states that the applicant has obtained a learner's permit and successfully completed at least twenty-five hours of a course of study which covers all of the material in the Connecticut Driver’s Manual and other information necessary for a person to know in order to safely operate a motor vehicle.

The student driver must also be given at least eight hours of behind-the-wheel, on-the-road instruction. Home-trained applicants must also show evidence of completing a 5 hour course on alcohol and drugs at their local secondary school or commercial driving school.
