CALIFORNIA DRIVER LICENSE REQUIREMENTS AT-A-GLANCE:
Drivers education is required for teens under 17½-years-old.
You must be at least 15½-years-old to receive your learner’s permit.
You must be at least 16-years-old to receive a driver’s (provisional) license.
You must log at least 50 hours of supervised driving with 10 hours being at night to receive a provisional driver’s license.
You must hold your learner’s permit for at least 6 months.
For the first 12 months or until you turn 18 , provisional licensed drivers may not drive from 11pm to 5am without supervision.
For the first 12 months or until you turn 18 , provisional licensed drivers may not carry passengers under 20-years-old without supervision.
HOW TO GET YOUR CALIFORNIA DRIVER LICENSE STEP-BY-STEP:

Sign up for our online California drivers education course.

Complete the course on your own time and pass the final exam to receive your Certificate of Completion.

Schedule to take the DMV permit written exam at your local DMV office. You should be well prepared after completing our online course.

Pass the written test and provide the appropriate paperwork (proof of social security, application, etc…) to get your learner’s permit. Now you can take to the road with an authorized instructor, parent, guardian, or CA licensed adult over the age of 25.

Complete 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a DMV licensed driving instructor.

Practice your driving and log all your necessary hours.

After six months with your learner’s permit, take the DMV driving exam. Pass and receive your California driver’s license!
