RHODE ISLAND DRIVER LICENSE REQUIREMENTS AT-A-GLANCE:
Minimum Age for Learner Permit 16 years old. However, you must first complete an approved driver’s education course before applying for your learner’s permit.

Minimum Amount of Supervised Driving 50 hours (including 10 hours at night) with a qualified supervising driver (i.e.--an adult who's at least 21 years old has held a driver's license for at least 5 years, and is approved by your parents to supervise your driving).
Unsupervised Driving Rules For the first 12 months after receiving your provisional license, you are allowed to drive unsupervised between the hours of 5am and 1am. After these hours, you must have a qualified supervising driver seated in the front passenger seat of the vehicle unless you are driving to/from work or if you’re a member of a volunteer fire, rescue, or EMS squad, and are driving to/from an incident site.
Passenger Rules For the first 12 months after receiving your provisional license, you may only carry one (1) non-family passenger who’s under 21 years of age. Also, all passengers in the vehicle must wear seat belts.
Other Drivers under 18 years of age may NOT use cell phones or text-messaging devices while they drive (this prohibition applies to both "hand-held" and "hands-free" devices).
