To take your Minnesota learners permit test, Minnesota's Driver and Vehicle Services ("DVS") Department requires you to be at least 15 years old and have completed 30 hours of driver education classroom instruction, such as Teen Driving Course Minnesota workbook driver education course.  This course is only approved for students who are full-time home schooled students working toward a home school diploma.

The Minnesota DVS seperates Minnesota drivers license into two (2) categories: provisional licenses and graduated (unrestricted) licenses. 

You may receive your provisional license after your 16th birthday, so long as you have your Minnesota instruction permit and have completed your 30 hours of drivers education classes like the workbook drivers education class offered by Teen Driving Course.   This course is only approved for students who are full-time home schooled students working toward a home school diploma.

To get your Minnesota instruction permit, you need to show the Minnesota DVS proof of your identify, such as a certified birth certificate, your Social Security number, and a Blue Card from your driving school.  You must also bring a parent or guardian to sign your Minnesota instruction permit application.

If you don't pass the Minnesota drivers license exam, you can retake the exam but will have to wait a day before returning to a Minnesota DVS location to take the drivers license test again.

You will need to pass a final examination at the end of the Teen Driving Course Minnesota workbook driver education class.  This exam covers what was reviewed throughout the class. The exam is 40 questions long and you must answer 32 correctly to pass and receive your certificate of completion.

Once you receive your instruction permit from the Minnesota DVS, you can begin driving, but remember you must be accompanied by a licensed Minnesota driver who's at least 21 years old sitting next to you in the front passenger seat.

To receive your Minnesota provisional drivers license, you must first hold your Minnesota instruction permit for 6 months with no traffic violations.

Yes.  In order to get our instruction permit, you must be currently enrolled in a professional behind-the-wheel driving class. You must successfully complete this class before you can apply for a drivers license with the Minnesota DVS.

In addition to completing your drivers education requirements, as well as drivers education classes such as those offered by Teen Driving Course, the Minnesota DVS requires you to complete 30 hours of supervised driving (including ten (10) hours at night) with a licensed Minnesota driver age 21 or older before you can apply for your Minnesota provisional drivers license.

For the first six (6) months after receiving your Minnesota provisional license, you may drive with only one (1) passenger under the age of 20 who's not a member of your immediately family unless you are accompanied by a parent or guardian. During the second six (6) months after receiving your provisional license, you may drive with no more than three (3) passengers under 20 outside your immediate family unless you're accompanied by a parent or guardian.

With an instruction permit, ABSOLUTELY NOT.  Minnesota state law expressly prohibits Minnesota drivers who only hold an instruction permit from driving alone.

However, when you receive your Minnesota provisional drivers license, these restrictions begin to ease. For the first six (6) months, you may drive alone on your Minnesota provisional license from 5am until midnight. After those hours, you must be accompanied by a Minnesota driver who is at least 21 years old unless you are driving to or from work, or are driving as part of your employment. The Minnesota DVS will also allow you to drive alone between midnight and 5am if you are driving to or from a school-sponsored function for which transportation has not been privided by the school.
